Its core component is a rotating “drum” (similar to the inner drum of a front-loading washing machine), covered with a special filter cloth. During operation, part of this drum is immersed in the liquid mixture to be processed (such as impurity-containing water, industrial slurries, etc.). Using “vacuum suction” (working on the same principle as a vacuum cleaner), the liquid is drawn through the filter cloth, while solid particles remain on the cloth. As the drum rotates slowly, these solid impurities are automatically scraped off. The entire process runs continuously without the need for constant manual supervision.

Vacuum drum filter is a device that achieves continuous filtration through vacuum suction and mechanical rotation. As the drum rotates slowly, the part submerged in water acts like a drinking straw—because the inside is “vacuum” (just like when you suck all the air out of a straw, the water rises on its own). This causes the water to readily pass through the small mesh holes on the drum’s surface, while solids are blocked outside the holes, sticking to the drum like little stickers. When the drum rotates out of the water, a dedicated scraper or other discharge device gently scrapes off these surface-adhered solids . The drum then continues rotating, submerging again to “suck up” more water. Through this continuous rotation, solid-liquid separation is effortlessly achieved.

Feeding and Adsorption Stage

A portion of the drum (a cylindrical shell, its surface covered with filter cloth and screen) is submerged in the slurry to be filtered. At this point, a vacuum environment is created inside the drum via a vacuum pump. Driven by the pressure difference between the inside and outside, the liquid in the slurry passes through the filter cloth and enters the filtrate channels inside the drum, while solid particles are retained by the filter cloth, forming a uniform filter cake on the surface.

Dewatering and Drying Stage

As the drum rotates, the section with the adsorbed filter cake exits the slurry surface and enters the dewatering zone. At this point, the vacuum suction continues to act, drawing out any remaining liquid from the filter cake to make it drier.

Cake Discharge Stage

As the drum rotates to the discharge zone with the dried filter cake, the cake can be removed through three optional methods:
  • Either scrape the filter cake directly off the filter cloth surface with a scraper (similar to using a ruler to scrape dried mud off a table).
  • Belt folding discharge, which utilizes changes in curvature for removal.
  • Precoat discharge, employed for sticky materials.

Cleaning and Regeneration Stage

After the filter cake is discharged, the drum continues to rotate and enters the cleaning zone. Here, clean water or a dedicated detergent is used to rinse the filter cloth, flushing away any residual fine particles to restore the filter cloth’s filtration capacity and prepare it for the next filtration cycle.
